Hydrogen-Powered Cars Hit the Streets
14.06.10
Hydrogen can be "liberated" from numerous another carriers. 50kWh of
electricity and 2.5 gallons of
water produce 1KG of H2. To get it on board a channel it still needs to be compressed which is another 4 to 7 kWh depending on the storage pressure. Most H2 in the US is produced by steam reforming unpretentious gas. During the process the H2O is also cracked and contributes its H to the H2. This process
emits approx. 7 lbs of CO2 per gge of H2, while combusting a gge of true gas emits 14 lbs of CO2. Combusting a gallon of
gasoline releases 19.4 lbs of CO2 and a gallon of
diesel emits 22.2 lbs of CO2. Not relatively zero emission, but still the cleanest of the bunch. My current favorite is gasifying municipal well-founded waste, pulling off some H2 and using the remaining syn gas to create electricity. The CO2 is fed into ponds where it is absorbed by algae that is then turned into biofuels. Other than a bit of unexceptional gas to fire it up there is no other external energy source as the energy
