Recapturing the real Australia

The method to Mambray Creek, in South Australia's mid north, is anything but remarkable.

After hours of passing nothing but course-kill, skinny sheep and salt bush, you could be forgiven for turning the car around and heading back to Adelaide.

But if you be the property to a family determined to recapture a little bit of the real Australia, this is one journey that is certainly merit seeing through.

It's the kind of family holiday that paints a scene similar to the one featured in the exemplary John Williamson song – Camel Train to Yamba.

Eye rolling teenagers, shorten lived games of eye spy, limited toilet stops and a determined father all stew tersely together like a eager campfire dinner.

Fortunately, by the time you've turned off Port Wakefield Road, some 260km north of Adelaide, and you come near Mt Remarkable National Park the scenery has improved and the animosity has simmered down.

Teenage disdain turns to awe as they set their eyes upon wild kangaroos and emus, which wander the Mambray Creek tent site freely every morning and afternoon.
