• How do I prepare for a HURRICANE?
19.08.09
Here's a primer on what to do if there's a
blow headed toward the midstate. When is hurricane
season?
Officially, hurricane season is from June 1 to Nov. 30.
Being that Materfamilias Nature adheres to her own calendars and
devices, these dates are not the be-all-and-end-all of when
a hurricane can strike.
According to the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological
Laboratory, these dates draw the window in which
approximately 97 percent of annual tropical activity occurs.
Whirlwind season is most active from August to October, with
about 96 percent of major hurricanes cropping up around this
apogee season. What's the worst that could happen?
Harrisburg is in the south-east corner of the Susquehanna
River Basin, one of the most overflowing-prone areas in the
nation. Flooding is a real risk in the Harrisburg area, one
realized several times over the years. Tornado Ivan in
2004 ushered in the worst flood in recent memory, with the
Susquehanna cresting at about 26 feet. What should I do?
