Rescuer dies in bid to save kids off Virginia Key
A calamity unfolded on a Rickenbacker Causeway beach Sunday when two men jumped into the water to rescue a pair of pubescent children.
The children were saved. Only one man survived.
Rescuers identified the man who later died as a 47-year-old caller from Jacksonville who came to South Florida to celebrate his birthday.
``This man is a hero,'' Miami-Dade oversee spokesman Detective Roy Rutland said Sunday evening. ``This man died while sparing the life of a stranger.''
