Downhill Derby returns for third year..."This is our third annual Downhill Derby. It's for ages 8 to 12," said Michael Miller, the affair's organizer. "We have 64 kids participating this year." The event sponsored by Pocono Raceway had many other businesses getting concerned by sponsoring a car or donating a prize. "Better Homes and Gardens supplied all the trophies," said Miller. "Each of the 20 cars has its own corporate subsidize, plus we have race sponsors." The races were an all-day event with emcee Randy Bigness, who brought along his Mackie Muscle Car. He not only called the winners at the get rid of line, but also entertained the crowd. The 20 identically built cars were built by the Delaware Water Gap Ideal Car Club. "The car club had a great time building the cars," Miller said. "We were universal to let the kids build their own but it is a liability. We wanted to make sure that each car's brakes and steering worked well. We tested the cars out on adults first." |
